For those who like metaphors (not me): the difference between German and

Japanese camera lenses is that while the Teutons* seek clarity, the Japanese

grade ぼけ, the way things fall out of focus. It is very easy to put one thing in the

middle of your frame and see it at the expense of its surroundings; it is harder

to maintain control of the background, the peripheral, the less-than-arresting

against which beauty must be relieved.
