I would like to meet
some people I know only through
their work: David Byrne,
Evan S. Connell, Steve Coogan,
Victoria Beckham (I mean
it). But there would be absolutely
no point; I assume of
anyone clever enough to impress me
a level of self-hatred
or at least self-distrust that would make
any compliment from a
fan insulting. To appreciate something
its creator has
renounced is only to debase yourself in his or
her eyes.

Work that can be done
can always be done better. But how to
congratulate someone for
the as yet impossible?
